Responsibilities in any Business Organization

There could be hundreds of Responsibilities in any Business Organization.

In my opinion, the three most critical and important business responsibilities, in order of priority, are:

  1. The Responsibility of the Staff is to Serve the Customer.
  2. The Responsibility of the Leadership is to Care for the Staff.
  3. The Responsibility of Everyone in the Business Organization is to Build the Company.

The above three areas of responsibility are inextricably connected, any one of them doesn’t exist without the other two. Systems Theory underpins and emphasizes the truth of interconnectedness. When this is understood and acted upon, magic occurs.

The philosophy of Holism based on Aristotle’s “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts” declares that “The end result will be greater than the number of its parts”. Whereas a machine, in perfect condition, cannot produce more than what it is built to deliver, a Business Organization, when the staff is united by its core values and driven by a common purpose, will deliver way more than the number of the combined staff compliment – INCREDIBLE.

Peter Drucker, the Father of modern business, taught “The purpose of a business is to create customers”. Without satisfying customers no revenue is generated to pay salaries, settle suppliers’ invoices, give a return on investment and provide for capital expenditure.

Only members of staff can serve and satisfy customers. And therefore it is incumbent for leadership to care for the staff, to create a generative business environment which evokes and enables commitment and to provide equipment and people to facilitate delivery. Simon Sinek calls Leaders to “Serve their people so that their people may better serve the customer”.

All of the above occurs within a Complex Living Organism we call a Business Organization or a Company. Every person within that Organism has the responsibility to Contribute, to Make a Difference, to Build the Body Corporate into a dynamic vehicle that cares not only for Customers, the Staff and the Company but also to the Community in which it exists and to the Planet that gives it life.
